National Law Awareness Week 2009 (24 – 31 October 2009)

The National Law Awareness Week (NLAW) is only a month away! This nationwide event, organised by the Bar Council National Legal Aid Committee (NLAC) will be launched at 11 a.m. on 24 October 2009 (Saturday) at Village Mall, Lagenda Heights, Sungai Petani, Kedah by YAB Dato’ Seri Ustaz Azizan bin Abdul Razak, the Chief Minister of Kedah State.
All Members of the Bar and members of the public are invited to the launch.
Kedah has been chosen as the launching venue for this year’s NLAW to show appreciation for the Kedah State Government’s financial assistance to the Kedah/Perlis Legal Aid Centre over the year. The NLAC encourages and welcomes similar gesture from other state governments. Offering access to justice to the public should be made one of the cornerstones of a responsible state government.
The theme for this year’s NLAW is "Where is Legal Aid?".
There is a lack of public awareness concerning legal aid. Many people do not know what it is all about, much less to know the locations of legal aid centres. Hence the theme for this year‘s NLAW. The NLAW activities are meant to answer any questions and uncertainties about legal matters, legal aid and legal aid centres.
The Bar Council believes the government should play a more active role in providing free and/or affordable legal aid services to the public.
Members and the public are also invited to participate in the Law Awareness activities in each state during the whole week.
Below is the tentative programme for the launch of the National Law Awareness Week.
