MyBar Pro Bono Hub

Connecting Legal Experience to Public Interest Needs

The MyBar Pro Bono Hub is a platform developed by the Bar Council Human Rights Committee to increase access to justice by connecting volunteer law firms with civil society organisations (“CSOs”) and non-governmental organisations (“NGOs”) in need of legal assistance on public interest-related matters.

This initiative fills a critical gap left by traditional legal aid systems, which often cannot reach all communities due to funding limits, eligibility requirements or scope constraints.

What We Do

The Hub facilitates meaningful partnerships between the legal profession and civil society by:

(1) matching volunteer law firms with vetted cases involving constitutional law, social justice and public interest issues;
(2) empowering NGOs and CSOs to request legal support on public interest-related matters; and
(3) promoting strategic litigation that drives systemic change and strengthens legal protections.

Focus Areas

We prioritise the following:

(1) constitutional law;
(2) public interest litigation;
(3) social justice advocacy;
(4) strategic lawsuits against public participation (“SLAPPs”); and
(5) strategic litigation on policy and reform issues.

Note: The Hub does not handle criminal defence or personal claims unless they fall within defined human rights criteria and are referred by approved NGOs / CSOs.

How It Works

(1) Law firms register to offer pro bono services in specific legal areas.
(2) NGOs and CSOs submit requests for legal assistance.
(3) Cases are reviewed and matched based on areas of experience, interest and impact potential.

The process is transparent, flexible and does not require a means test for participation.

Why It Matters

The MyBar Pro Bono Hub supports the Malaysian Bar’s mission to:

(1) promote a culture of pro bono and social responsibility within the legal profession;
(2) advance access to justice for marginalised communities; and
(3) bridge the gap of access to justice

By collaborating with other initiatives — such as the Bar Council Legal Aid Centres  — the Hub helps ensure that no one is left behind and public interest causes receive the legal support they need.
