BC Legal Aid Scheme

The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (“BC LAC”) is formally recognised under Part VA of the Legal Profession (Amendment) Act 2025 to, inter alia, provide legal aid to aided persons and assist the public in matters relating to justice.

With branches in each state in West Malaysia, BC LAC upholds the established role of the Malaysian Bar under section 42(1)(g) and (h) of the Legal Profession Act 1976 in supporting and protecting the public in legal matters.

Who We Help

  • Individuals who cannot afford a lawyer; and
  • Malaysian citizens and non-citizens.

What We Can Do for You

We provide legal aid in the following areas of law:

  • Civil (including family, employment, citizenship and other matters);
  • Criminal; and
  • Syariah.

How It Works

  • Legal advice is free.  However, legal representation is subject to a means test to determine if you qualify for legal assistance.
  • You need to pay for court filing fees and other disbursements associated with your case, which you will pay directly to the lawyer assigned to you.
  • BC LAC does not accept payments from clients.

Steps to Get Help

(1) Walk in or contact us to make an appointment.  Click here for locations of BC LAC branches in each state.
(2) Bring documents relevant to your case.
(3) Undergo a means test to check if you qualify for legal representation.
(4) Get legal advice or assistance from our volunteer lawyers.
(5) Discuss further steps (eg legal representation) based on your case.

If you require further information or have any enquiries, please send us an email at [email protected] or contact your nearest BC LAC branch.
