Notification Under Section 3

IN exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph (c) of the definition of "qualified person" in section 3 of the Legal Profession Act 1976 [Act 166], the Qualifying Board declares that as from 1 May 1999 any person who has passed-

(a) the final examination conducted by any of the universities listed in the Schedule leading to the degree of Bachelor of Laws; and
(b) the examination for the Certificate in Legal Practice conducted by the Qualifying Board,

shall be a qualified person for the purposes of the Act.

2. A person who has passed the final examination conducted by any of the universities listed in the Schedule leading to the degree of Bachelor of Laws before 1 May 1999 and who was then eligible to gain admission as a barrister or solicitor in New Zealand and in the case of Australia in the State in which the university is situated shall ipso facto be a qualified person.

3. A person who has enrolled on or before 30 April 1998 in any of the universities listed in the Schedule, who has commenced the first year or first semester of full-time study in the programme leading to the degree of Bachelor of Laws in the respective university and will complete the full course at that university and who will then become eligible to gain admission as a barrister or solicitor in accordance with paragraph 2 shall be exempted from paragraph 1(b).

4. P.U. (B) 388/85, 577/89, 595/90, 22/92 and 252/96 are hereby revoked.
