THE Peaceful Assembly Bill is the best measure to safeguard public interest as the nation steps into a new era of freedom of speech, said Malaysia Youth Council vice-president Datuk Irmohizam Ibrahim.

It would allow more freedom for the people to gather  peacefully.

He said public assemblies were often laced with provocative elements that could lead to violence.

“Often, public assemblies held for a good cause were hijacked by various political bodies for their own purpose. I believe the younger generation wants public assemblies to be conducted in a peaceful manner and  free of provocation.”

Yayasan Muamalat Belia chief executive officer Noor Azman Idris said the bill was in the country’s  best interest and believed that the government  adopted the right formula concerning the people’s rights.

“We are civic-minded  and are opposed to any sort of rioting, and we hope that our people will not be influenced. Malaysians generally prefer to sit down and talk, rather than riot.”

Malaysian Syariah Lawyers Association deputy president Musa Awang said the new law would open a new chapter to public freedom as it adhered to the concept of freedom as promised under the  Constitution.

“In a multiracial country such as ours, these laws are necessary as there are people who would use riot to incite racial hatred.

“Under syariah, public assembly is allowed if it is for a good reason, but rebelling against the government is not, as it is considered as bughah,” said Musa.

Bughah is defined as Muslims who resisted and rebelled against Ulil Amri (priest) of a just ruler or government carrying out syariah.
