NOV 22 — Without much fanfare, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s final push
to reform Malaysia’s institutions before stepping down in March seems to be
coming along. Legislation to set up a more independent Anti-Corruption
Commission will be tabled in a couple of weeks while the more controversial
Judicial Appointments Commission was given the green light by the Cabinet at
	its weekly meeting yesterday.

PUTRAJAYA: The National Fatwa council has declared that the yoga practice which
involves three elements of physical movements, worshipping and chanting as haram
(prohibited) in Islam.

Its chairman Datuk Dr Abdul Shukor Husin said although merely doing the physical
movements of yoga minus the worshipping and chanting might not be wrong in the

<title>Human Rights Watch: Malaysia: Drop case against labour activist</title>
			<link>http://www.malaysianbar.org.my/human_rights/human_rights_watch_malaysia_drop_case_against_labour_activist.html</link>
			<description>
Country’s longest-running case is set to resume

(New York, November 22, 2008) – The Malaysian government should exonerate Irene
Fernandez, a leading labour activist convicted in 2003 on politically motivated
charges of “publishing false news,” Human Rights Watch said today. The Kuala
Lumpur High Court has scheduled hearings next week in the criminal case against
Fernandez, which has continued for more than 12 years.

In July 1995, Fernandez, the director of TENAGANITA, a nongovernmental
organization that exposes the abuse of migrant workers in Malaysia, sent a
public memorandum to the Malaysian government, titled “Abuse, Torture and
Dehumanized Conditions of Migrant Workers in Detention Centers.”
