BC 2009/2010 Candidate: Azmi Bin Tan Sri Dr Moh Rais
Azmi bin Tan Sri Dr Mohd Rais, 38 years old, is a partner and
founder of Messrs Zulkifli Yong Azmi & Co. since 1995. He graduated with honours
(2nd class upper LL.B) from the International Islamic University in 1993 and
obtained his diploma in Shariah law and practice (IIUM) and Masters in the Law
of Banking (IIUM) in 1996 and 2005, respectively. Upon graduation, he joined the
Banking Department of Bank Negara Malaysia, and subsequently chambered at Messrs
Zaid Ibrahim & Co. After being admitted to the Bar in 1995, he practiced at ZICO
shortly before setting up his firm. Azmi is a firm believer in continuous
education and is currently he pursuing his Ph.D specializing in Islamic Finance.
He is an ex-Maktab Rendah Sains MARA Seremban student and remains active in MRSM
gatherings.
Azmi’s firm specializes in conveyancing/loan documentations and Syariah
litigation/estate planning and he is an eminent personality within the Syariah
circle. He has represented many high-profile clients in the Syariah courts,
covering several issues pertaining to constitutional conflicts issues, waqf,
hibah, syariah offences, matrimonial matters and harta sepencarian. He also
represents the Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan in some cases involving
conversion and custody matters. Azmi has also appeared in numerous TV shows
pertaining to matrimonial matters and has given many talks at the Legal Aid
Centre to those aspiring to be syariah lawyers or interested in the subject
matter. He served as a committee member with the Persatuan Peguam Syariah
Malaysia (Jawatankuasa Undang-undang Sivil dan Hukum Syara’) from 2002 to 2006.
Azmi has accepted the nomination as a candidate with the hope of providing more
Syariah-based input and alternatives to the current issues faced by the Council,
whether it be personal law or Islamic finance.
