The Malaysian Bar welcomes the decision of the Kuala Lumpur Magistrates’ Court today to acquit lawyer Siti Kasim after due process on a charge of obstructing the duties of a public servant.1
It was reported that one of the reasons for Siti Kasim’s acquittal is that she was acting in her capacity as a lawyer who was defending her client when the raid was conducted.
The Malaysian Bar hopes that this matter can be laid to rest following the decision of the Magistrates’ Court.
The UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers (1990) ensure that lawyers are free to act for their clients and carry out their professional duties without any hindrance.
