An Extraordinary General Meeting of the Malaysian Bar (“EGM”) was held at Wisma MCA, Kuala Lumpur on 27 May 2022.
The EGM was convened by the Bar Council to discuss allegations of interference with, and intimidation of, the Judiciary, which risk the undermining of public confidence in, and the functioning of, the Judiciary as an independent institution.
One motion was proposed by the Bar Council and six motions were proposed by Members of the Bar, for consideration at the EGM.
A brief summary of the EGM follows below.
(1) The Chairman, Karen Cheah Yee Lynn (President of the Malaysian Bar) called the meeting to order at 3:37 pm, as the quorum of 500 Members had been achieved at 3:30 pm.
(2) The “Resolution on Upholding and Protecting the Independence of the Judiciary and the Preservation of Public Confidence in the Judiciary”, proposed by the Bar Council, was adopted at the EGM. Click here to view the resolution.
(3) A total of 623 Members and 77 pupils in chambers registered their attendance at the EGM, which concluded at 6:40 pm.
