Motor Insurance Review Ad Hoc Committee: 2011/2012 Interim Report 9 Nov 2011 12:00 am

The Motor Insurance Review Ad Hoc Committee (“MIRAC”) has met on six occasions since January 2011.

MIRAC’s work continues to revolve around Bank Negara Malaysia (“BNM”)’s proposed revamp of the third party bodily injury and death scheme.  The main focus this year has been the request that BNM set up a joint working committee so that feedback from all parties regarding the proposed revamp can be discussed.  After much urging by various stakeholders, including MIRAC, BNM adopted the suggestion and formed the body, known as the Joint Working Committee on Efficiency Enhancement Measures in Motor Claims Settlement (“Joint Working Committee”).

The inaugural meeting of the Joint Working Committee took place on 7 Apr 2011.  Bar Council’s representatives – MIRAC Co–Chairperson Jude Raj and member Abdul Rahim Rajudin – attended the meeting, along with representatives from various other bodies such as the Attorney General’s Chambers, Judiciary, Ministry of Health, Polis DiRaja Malaysia, Consumers Association of Penang (“CAP”), Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (“FOMCA”), Malaysian Motor Insurance Pool, Persatuan Insurans Am Malaysia (“PIAM”), Takaful Malaysia, and other transport associations.   CAP, FOMCA and PIAM were the main organisations that provided feedback.

The Joint Working Committee holds its monthly meeting on the fourth Thursday of each month.  In order for MIRAC members to be apprised of the outcome of, and provide input into, the Joint Working Committee’s meetings, MIRAC meets every third Thursday of the month.
