KUALA LUMPUR, Tues: Former President of the Supreme
Court Bar Association, Munir A. Malik who delivered a paper at the recent
Malaysian Law Conference here has been arrested and ordered to be imprisoned for
one month under preventive detention orders.
The others detained include the chief justice of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Chaudhry, several senior judges, current SCBA president Aitzaz Ahsan and another former SCBA president, Tariq Mahmood. The president of the Lahore High Court bar association, Ahsan Bhoon, and former bar leader Ali Ahmed Kurd are also under arrest.
Addressing the Malaysian Law Conference on October 30,
Munir revealed that during the judicial crisis, his family home in Karachi had
been sprayed with automatic gunfire as a result of his involvement.
At that time, Munir was one of 6 lawyers appointed by Chaudhry to
represent him against the charges brought against him.
