KUALA LUMPUR, Wed: As part of the 60th Anniversary of the Malaysian Bar,
a gala dinner was held to coincide with the farewell dinner for the 14th
Malaysian Law Conference on 31st October 2007 at the KL Convention Centre.
This year’s event saw a record turn-out of more than 550 diners comprising both
local and foreign delegates made up of lawyers, legal counsel, academics,
members of the Judicial and Legal Services, Attorney-General’s Chambers,
corporate sector, local universities, non-governmental organisation, other
professionals and members of various industries who turned up to celebrate this
double and joyous occasion.
The anniversary dinner started at about 8:40pm with a performance by the ASK
Dance Co. The ASK Dance Co. was established by the Akademi Seni Budaya dan
Warisan Kebangsaan.
The welcoming remarks were given by the Master of Ceremony, Mr Chacko Vadaketh.
He put forward his views on the speeches presented by the distinguished speakers
at the conference. He stated that many speakers presented fiery speeches but on
the other hand, some were not so fiery. He added on that lawyers should be
trained on presentation skills.
Dinner was served after the opening remarks. After the second dish, a short and
pleasant speech was given by the President of the Malaysian Bar, Ms Ambiga
Sreenevasan. She advised members of the Bar to uphold the dignity of the legal
profession and to always gain the trust of the clients. She emphasised that the
Malaysian Bar did not get this far overnight, but it took 60 years. She then
followed by honouring the past presidents of the Malaysian Bar. The past
presidents were invited to stand as their names were mentioned and were given a
round of applause from the floor. She also acknowledged that it would not be
possible without the help and assistance of the Council members. She further
gave a token of appreciation to the sponsors for the conference, i.e. CIMB Bank,
Jardine Lloyd and Sunrise Berhad. The Malaysian Bar president ended her speech
by giving a toast to the guests at the gala dinner as well as members of the
Bar.
There was a slide show presentation while diners were busy filling up their
stomachs with the delicious meal. The slide show presentation was on the
activities of the Malaysian Bar which included the recent Walk for Justice on
September 26. The slides also projected the appreciation from the 14th Malaysian
Law Conference Organising Committee who thanked everyone present at the dinner
for their support and participation and in making every effort to attend the
conference. He also thanked the Committee and all others for their hard work
which had made the 14th Malaysian Law Conference a notable and memorable event
of the Malaysian Bar..
The crowd was entertained to a captivating performance by Francissca Peter with
her strong and powerful vocal. She presented songs in English, Mandarin and
Malay.
The extremely hilarious duo, the Comedy Court provided the entertainment
highlight of the evening with a 30 minutes stand up comedy performance. All eyes
were on the duo and the hall was virtually full of laughter as they gave their
witty comments on certain politicians and members of the judiciary.
Apart from the interesting performance of the evening, all dinner guests
received an exclusive door gift – a premium watch embossed with the 60th
Anniversary of the Malaysian Bar logo.
