This year, two Members of the Bar were selected to receive the Malaysian Bar’s Sports Personality of the Year Award: Dalgit Singh and See Kwong Yan.
The presentation ceremony took place at the Malaysian Bar Annual Dinner and Dance 2013, held at the Taming Sari Grand Ballroom, Royale Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, on 16 Mar 2013.
More information about each recipient follows below.
Dalgit Singh
Dalgit Singh represented Perak state in hockey from 1978 to 1989, and has also played hockey for the Malaysian Police and the Malaysian Sikhs.
Since joining the Malaysian Bar in 1985, Dalgit has represented the Bar in hockey, and is still named in the hockey side, so long as there is no clash with his first love — golf.
Since taking up golf in 2002, Dalgit has actively represented the Bar, and has been in the winning team for most of those years. He won the “Best Overall Pair” title in 2005 and again in 2010, with his playing partners in Singapore. While serving as the Perak Bar Golf Captain in 2008, he was instrumental in organising the Malaysian Bar Interstate Golf Tournament in Perak that year.
At the state level, Dalgit was the Sports Chairman for the Perak Bar for two terms, in 1999 and 2000. He has also represented the Perak Bar in hockey, football, athletics and golf. He captained the Perak Bar hockey side for many years, and has now been serving as the Golfing Captain for the Perak Bar since 2006. Dalgit led the Perak Bar in winning the Malaysian Bar Interstate Golf Tournament 2010 in Kuantan, Pahang.
See Kwong Yan
See Kwong Yan made his debut at the Malaysia/Singapore Bench and Bar Games 1998, hosted in Penang, where he played for the Malaysian Bar’s Premier Football team.
Kwong Yan’s next appearance at the Games was in Selangor in 2000, where he again represented the Bar in Premier Football. He continued to do so, and in 2004 he was appointed as convener for the Veterans team and played for that team at the Games in Kuantan, Pahang. The Games took on an even more significant meaning in Kwong Yan’s life that year, as he met his wife, Jennie Tan, there.
He still serves in the capacity of convener, and continues to play for the team at each year’s Games.
Kwong Yan had the privilege of representing the Bar at the Mundiavocat (World Football Cup for Lawyers) tournament in Turkey in 2006, where the team finished in thirty–third place.
Note from Kwong Yan:
I wish to thank the Chairpersons and my fellow members in the Bar Council Sports Committee. It is a pleasure serving with you. I also wish to thank the members of the Malaysian Bar Veterans Football team for their unstinting support and selfless sacrifice for the good name of the Bar.
