The seminar on "How Not to be a Statistic: The Conveyancing Scam" was
organised for the first time in Pahang on 26 June 2019, by the Bar
Council Professional Indemnity Insurance ("PII") and Risk Management
Department, with the assistance of the Pahang Bar Secretariat.
The interactive seminar –– held from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm at the Pahang
Bar Auditorium –– was aimed at conveyancing lawyers, and focused on the
approaches in handling scam cases that occur within a law firm.
It also addressed cases that were reported to the PII Scheme and the
implications for law firms.
The seminar was moderated by Karen Cheah Yee Lynn of Messrs Chooi &
Company + Cheang & Ariff, and the line–up of panellists consisted
of:
(1) Mohan Sankaran of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Sdn Bhd (broker for
the PII Scheme);
(2) Sarengapani K Rajoo of Messrs Pani & Associates; and
(3) Dennis Goh of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Sdn Bhd.
There was a lively question–and–answer session at the end of the seminar. A participant described how the his law firm had faced the scenario shared in the case study, and that he was lucky to have realised it before the firm fell prey to the scam.
Approximately 30 participants attended this seminar, which carried two
CPD points. The participants' feedback indicated that they were
keen to attend other sessions on similar topics in the future.
