The Bar Council Goods and Services Tax (“GST”) and Tax Subcommittee, in collaboration with the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (“RMCD”), held a seminar on the proposed GST at the Raja Aziz Addruse Auditorium, Bar Council on 3 Dec 2012. The seminar was centred on the proposed introduction of GST, which is meant to replace the sales and service tax that has been in use for several decades in Malaysia.
The objective of this seminar was to enable the Members of the Bar to have a better understanding of GST, the proposed GST system, the transition period, and the implementation of GST. Topics addressed included:
(1) Why GST?;(2) Proposed GST model;(3) Eligibility to register;(4) Responsibility and obligation of registered persons;(5) GST treatment on supplies made by professional services (legal services);(6) Transition period; and(7) Preparation and readiness.

The Bar Council GST and Tax Subcommittee had the distinct honour of having Raizam bt Setapa @ Mustapha, Senior Assistant Director of Customs II, as the speaker; and Tan Sim Kiat, Deputy Director of Customs and Raja Kumaran, PwC, Executive Director of Indirect Tax, as the panellists. The seminar was moderated by Anand Raj, Chairperson of the Bar Council GST and Tax Subcommittee.
