Intellectual Property Committee 2010/2011 Interim Report PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 30 September 2010 09:34am

The Intellectual Property Committee (IPC) kicked off the year with a successful Intellectual Property (IP) Workshop on “Challenging IP Issues” on 10 Feb 2010.  Close to 100 participants took part in the Workshop, which provided an invaluable update of, and insight into, the recent high-profile IP decisions in Malaysia and Singapore.

On 11 May 2010, the Intellectual Property Cooperation of Malaysia (MyIPO) held a consultation with select key stakeholders on the Government’s proposed amendments to the Copyright Act 1987.  IPC submitted its feedback and comments on the proposed amendments to MyIPO on 21 May 2010.

As part of a study in search of best practices in cyber laws, a three-member team from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority visited the Bar Council on 8 July 2010, with IPC representatives on hand to receive the delegates.  The focus of the visitors was laws relating to electronic transactions and signatures, data protection and other forms of computer misuse.

Another successful event that followed was the “Coffee Talk on Personal Data Protection Act 2010”, which was held on 22 July 2010 at the KL Bar Auditorium.  The response to the Coffee Talk was overwhelming, with over 90 participants who attended and actively participated in the discussions.

“.my DOMAIN REGISTRY” invited IPC members to be on a reference panel for the “sensitive names project”.  This project’s objectives are to:
(1)    achieve a transparent and efficient domain name registration system;
(2)    fully automate the domain name registration system; and
(3)    provide a channel to lodge complaints for parties aggrieved by the registration of “.my” domain names.

An IP talk will be held in Penang in October 2010, in collaboration with the Penang State Bar Committee.
