32 Members of the Malaysian Bar have received the Executive Diploma in Islamic Law (Islamic Banking), awarded by the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM). The convocation was held on 14 Nov 2009 at the IIUM campus in Gombak, Kuala Lumpur.
The Executive Diploma course is a collaboration between IIUM and the Bar Council. This initiative of the Professional Standards and Development Committee (PSDC) is the first time that the Bar Council has collaborated with an institution of higher learning on a professional development programme.
This course was organised by PSDC in response to the government’s decision to set up the Islamic Financial Centre and allow foreign lawyers to practise Islamic Finance and Banking in Malaysia. PSDC embarked on this programme with IIUM as it provided an excellent opportunity for Members of the Bar to acquire the requisite expertise in this area of the law. The venture was also aimed to demonstrate to the government, and particularly Bank Negara Malaysia, that there is local expertise for Islamic Finance and Banking. Hence, there is no need for foreign lawyers to be admitted into the country for this purpose.
