Lim Chee Wee Bar Council panel to review syllabus
Bar Council welcomes move

Since 1993, the Malaysian Bar has been advocating the establishment of a Common Bar Course (“CBC”) as a single entry point into the legal profession for all law graduates (both local and foreign). The CBC is intended to replace the Certificate of Legal Practice (“CLP”) and all law graduates must enroll and successfully complete the CBC in order to practise law in Malaysia. The present pupillage requirement of 9 months with an advocate and solicitor of more than 7 years’ experience is to be maintained.

Therefore, the Malaysian Bar supports the call of the Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim to replace the CLP with the CBC.

However, the implementation of the CBC would take some time as a comprehensive and appropriate course content must be developed to ensure that all new practising lawyers are equipped with the adequate legal skills. To this end, the Bar Council has set up an ad-hoc committee to look into the course content for the CBC.
