Allowing the appeals of Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sukma Darmawan against conviction signifies a meaningful turning point in the Malaysian legal and judicial system, demonstrating that Malaysian justice can be independent of politics.

It cannot escape notice that Anwar's case has for many years weighed heavily on the conscience of ordinary Malaysians. The widespread perception of political linkage drew comment from the Prime Minister when he said that there would be no interference with the Court's decision. The judiciary represents the conscience, and not the political preference, of the people. For a long time this representation has been found largely wanting, for reasons which will no doubt be recorded and assessed by commentators and historians. Today, however, it has been freshly awakened.

Today's decision affirms not only the views that have been held by the Bar Council (as well as countless international legal bodies of repute) on the case; but also the crucial values of a justice system that the Bar Council has been consistently advocating. It is hoped that today will set the future direction for our judiciary to regain its independence and credibility. This significant step must be continuously reinforced and built upon in order to fully regain the trust and confidence of our people in the justice system.

We have reason to look forward to a better future for our system of justice, when the rule of law is allowed to prevail.

Chairman
Bar Council
