Amendment to Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 26 July 2001 12:00am

The Bar Council welcomes the Government's proposal to amend the Federal Constitution to remove laws and policies deemed discriminatory by reason of sex. The extension of the proposed amendment to other existing laws, policies and appointments in the future will be a laudable and bold attempt to empower each gender to achieve their full potential generally.

The amendment to Article 8(2) of the Federal Constitution will be a step forward. It is hoped that with the removal of sexual discrimination, the female citizens of our country will be able to move forward together, not only in the areas of law, employment, administration and the carrying on of trade but also in the areas of family, health, education and sport.

The Bar Council is of the view that gender equality and harmony is imperative in everyday life as our country progresses not only towards a better economy, but an improved society in which justice is experienced equally by all.

The Bar Council looks forward to a speedy extension of the amendment to other existing laws, policies and appointments.

Dated this 26th day of July 2001.

Mah Weng Kwai
Chairman
Bar Council
