PETALING JAYA: The time is right for all 14 component parties of Barisan Nasional to be merged, Gerakan Youth chief Datuk Mah Siew Kong said.

He welcomed the Merdeka Centre survey which revealed that two-thirds of Malaysians want one Barisan multi-racial party.

“Gerakan Youth proposed at its national delegates conference last year that the 14 component parties should be merged, but it was rejected by many component party leaders who said that it was not the right time to do so.

“I urge Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and all component party leaders to study and consider our proposal,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Mah called on his Barisan comrades to make the merger move immediately because the general election results proved the need for a single multi-racial Barisan.

Meaningless for Gerakan to stay on...

As a matter of principle, if BN fails to merge its component parties to form a single party, then Gerakan should quit.

Otherwise, it is meaningless for Gerakan to hang on...
