PENANG (Nov 6, 2007):
Senior lawyer Datuk SP Annamalai was stabbed to death while walking to his car parked near his office in Greenhall at 6pm yesterday. He died at a private hospital two hours later.

Annamalai, who was in his 60s, is believed to have been stabbed in the back by a man armed with a parang.

Jagdeep Singh Deo, whose office is next to Annamalai’s, said his staff helped the badly-injured lawyer into a car and took him to a hospital where he underwent surgery. Jagdeep received a call about 8pm that Annamalai had died.

Another lawyer, RN Rayer said he rushed to the hospital with other lawyers to donate blood after receiving an SMS that Annamalai had to undergo surgery. He had just reached home about 8.10pm when he received news about Annamalai’s death.

George Town OCPD ACP Azam Abdul Hamid, when contacted, said police have classified the case as murder.

Annamalai’s wife is said to be India. He leaves two sons who are in their 30s.

Rayer said Annamalai usually handled civil cases and was a humble person. Jagdeep described Annamalai as a quiet and nice man.

Annamalai Didn't Deserve This

How could this happen to a lawyer who always struck me as a deeply religious man who carried on his practice in a quiet, dignified professional way? We live in dark times.

Congrats to the Penang lawyers who were caring enough to come forward to donate blood to a fallen colleague.

It deeply saddens me

It deeply saddens me that uncle Annamalai has to leave this world in this manner, just 2 days short of Deepavali.

I've known him since very young as he was a close friend of my father, our families were also close.

I had the opportunity to cross swords with him in Court...and as Haji Sulaiman had succintly put it...he coducted his case in a dignified professional way. Apart from that he was instrumental in resolving a complicated estate matter involving distance relatives of mine, where various factions were represented
by different lawyers. He took the lead to resolve the matter.

He is of jovial disposition with no airs and very friendly with other lawyers and often cracks jokes when in conversation. Despite his seniority and knowledge he puts young practitioners at ease when dealing with him.

He often teases me for my postings here. He often tells fellow lawyers that he regards me as his son, after tragically losing his son who was my same age some 18 years ago.

He is also known to be a charitable person. He helmed the leadership of an Orphanage for many years until his demise last night. He also holds a record of donating blood more than 100 times!

I had the opportunity of wishing him Deepavali last Thursday while he was entering and i was leaving his favourite food joint. He in turn wished me belated selamat Hari Raya.

May uncle Annamalai's soul rest in peace.

Abdul Fareed bin Abdul Gafoor
