KUALA LUMPUR, Tues: The Bar Council Human Rights Committee was privileged in being invited by the International Islamic University Malaysia to co–organise with SUHAKAM the Harun Hashim Client Counselling Competition at the IIUM last Saturday, February 16.
The competition was successful one with 5 universities taking part in it. They were:
University Technology MARA
University Kebangsaan Malaysia
International Islamic University of Malaysia
University Utara Malaysia and
University Sains Islam Malaysia
There were two preliminary rounds and the Finals. 18 persons were invited to be judges for the competition. 3 members of SUHAKAM, 4 Law Professors, 5 Counselors and 6 practitioners from the BCHR.
The six of us who participated were Edmund Bon, Brendan Navin Siva, Saha Deva, Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, Syamsuriatina Ishak and Pushpa Ratnam.
UKM and IIUM were the finalists. They were faced with the factual problems of Kampung Barembang which was prepared by Shanmuga Kanesalingam and Edward Saw who did the matter in Court.
The finalists were judged by Puan Nurul Hasanah Ahmed Hassain (SUHAKAM), Assoc Prof Dr Dato Abdul Halim Sidek (Client Counselling Specialist) and Edmund Bon (Malaysian Bar HRC Chairman).
UKM became the champions.
The successful team will be meeting at an international level in Bangalore India in the near future.
