Nine years ago today, 40–year–old Prakash Moses reportedly died in the hospital following a fall during the registration process at the Hang Tuah police station lock–up.
Prakash Moses was arrested on 14 Feb 2003, brought to the hospital after the fall on the following day and was pronounced dead in the morning on 18 February.
An inquest was conducted into this custodial death as required by Chapter XXXII of the Criminal Procedure Code, and the coroner found that the death was caused by head injuries due to the fall.
Based on statistics disclosed by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 156 persons died in police custody from the year 2000 until February 2011.
