LAWASIA is holding its inaugural annual conference in Malaysia this year. The
conference is jointly organized by Law Asia and the Bar Council of Malaysia. It
will be held on 29th October to 1st November 2008 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention
Center. A total of 1,500 delegates from the Asia Pacific region are expected to
attend this conference and it promises to be the premier legal conference of
2008.
About LAWASIA
LAWASIA is a professional association of representatives of bar councils, law
associations, individual lawyers, law firms and corporations principally from
the Asia Pacific region.
LAWASIA facilitates its members participation in the
most dynamic economic region in the world. It also provides an invaluable
opportunity for lawyers to come together to exchange ideas and information on
regional issues and to establish a network of working relationships in the Asia
Pacific region. Membership includes practicing lawyers, government lawyers, law
teachers and judges and is open to law firms and corporations world-wide.
Since its inception in 1966, LAWASIA has built up an enviable reputation among
lawyers, business people and governments both within and outside the region as a
committed, productive and genuinely representative organization. It has
established a strong and effective professional network encompassing the vast
majority of lawyers who have an interest in the Asia Pacific region.
In 1981, LAWASIA was accorded Consultative Status with the Economic and Social
Council of the United Nations. It also has Observer Status with the World
Intellectual Property Organisation and Operational Relations Status with UNESCO.
The objectives of LAWASIA
LAWASIA’s primary objective is to foster professional and business relations
between lawyers, businesses and government representatives in the region. It
also promotes the rule of law in a diverse range of political, cultural, social
and economic contexts throughout the region.
The association’s other objectives include :-
• disseminating knowledge of the law of member countries;
• promoting the efficient working of the legal systems of member countries;
• promoting the efficient working of the legal systems of member countries;
• promoting development of the law and uniformity where appropriate;
• furthering international understanding and goodwill;
• promoting the administration of justice;
• promoting and protecting human rights;
• advancing legal education.
LAWASIA Conference
LAWASIA conference takes many forms. The flagship event has traditionally been
its biennial conference. The Business Law section holds a major business law
conference on the alternate year to the biennial. In addition to these regular
events, conferences and seminars are held on a range of specialist and general
topics, according to needs which are either identified by the LAWASIA Executive
or which are specifically requested by a member organization.
The 2008 LAWASIA CONFERENCE
The 21st LAWASIA conference in Kuala Lumpur is a unique event. It is the
inaugural annual LAWASIA conference and it represents a permanent shift from the
traditional biennial conferences. The conference therefore enjoys great
historical significance. Further, the conference will cover a wide array of
