“Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, It seems
to me most strange that men should fear, Seeing that death, a necessary end,
Will come when it will come.” (William Shakespeare 1564–1616)
SHAH ALAM, Jan. 19: It was a solemn, quiet and dignified affair on a
Friday afternoon in the Shah Alam High Court. Many had gathered in the court of
Justice Dato' K.N. Segara for reference
proceedings in memory of 15 departed members of the Selangor Bar.
The reference proceedings on January 19 were a continuation of the Bar’s tradition
of remembering and paying respect to its departed members.
The last reference proceedings held by the Selangor Bar were
held in the Shah Alam High Court on July 13, 1998.
This time, the proceedings were held in memory of the following members of the Selangor Bar:
1) Annarasa Rasiah (07.04.1999)
2) Anthony Rocky Fernandez (28.03.2001)
3) Balasubramaniam K (05.11.1992)

14) Vincent Paul Raj (20.07.2002)
15) Woo Yuen Seng (11.05.1999)
The proceedings started by observing a minute of silence. The movers shared the
illustrious legal careers of the departed and Haji Sulaiman Abdullah on behalf of
the Bar Council was also present to share his anecdote of the departed to whom
he deeply regarded as close allies and friends in the Bar.
Memories of the departed were invoked when some of the comments made drew
attention to particular characteristics of the deceased. One being the late P.
Kuppusamy, who is best known as a debonair dresser with matching handkerchief
and tie. He is known to his close friends to keep extra handkerchiefs and hair
brushes in his briefcase to keep himself immaculately dressed. Meanwhile the
late Vincent Paul Raj is remembered as a man of small stature but of a ‘loud’
presence with his ever sonorous voice.
As a respect for the departed members of the Bar, Justice Segara ordered that the records of the proceedings be kept in the court’s archives, and a copy be extended
to the families of the deceased.
The proceedings ended on solemn note, and all present were invited to light
refreshment.
