KUALA LUMPUR: Bar Council president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan wants police to
thoroughly investigate the petrol bombs left at the Bar Council building and
hurled into the compound of her former house in Bukit Daman– sara on Saturday.
"It is regretted that Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil was on
the receiving end of the petrol bombs meant for me.
"The bombs were apparently targeted at me and these acts have shocked members of
the Bar and members of the public," she told the New Straits Times yesterday.
She was commenting on the incident where two petrol bombs were thrown into the
compound of Shahrizat's house in Jalan Setia Kasih 1, Bukit Damansara, by two
men on a motorcycle between 2.30am and 3am on Saturday.
It is believed the Molotov cocktails were meant for Ambiga as the house was
formerly hers. The bombs were believed to have been thrown in connection with an
open forum on conversion to Islam organised by the council, which drew much
criticism.
"It is disappointing that many of our leaders have chosen to
remain silent on the violence and aggression at the forum. This may be seen as
tacitly condoning it.
"I have been advised to take additional safety precautions and I am now looking
into security measures."
Police also found two petrol bombs on the steps of the Bar Council building in
Leboh Pasar Besar on Saturday, where the public forum was being held.
The forum was stopped after about an hour on the advice of the police as large
numbers of protesters had gathered to demonstrate against it.
Meanwhile, City Criminal Investigation Department chief Senior Assistant
Commissioner II Ku Chin Wah assured Ambiga that police were thoroughly
investigating both incidents and hoped to make arrests soon.
