The Malaysian Bar is pleased to note that the most Senior Court of Appeal Judge YAA Dato’ Gopal Sri Ram, 62, (picture) has been made a Bencher of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn.
Dato’ Gopal Sri Ram has the eminence of having created records of sorts in the Malaysian Judiciary. He was the first member of the Malaysian Bar to be elevated directly to the Court of Appeal Malaysia. This was in 1994. And now it appears that he is the first Malaysian Sitting Appeal Court Judge to be elevated and exalted so to speak a Bencher of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn. He was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn in July 1969.
The Malaysian Law Journals are replete and resplendent with its Lordship’s well crafted linguistic Judgments on novel points of law.
The learned Judge who is well known for his brilliant explosive and unconventional judgments is the current President of the Lincoln’s Inn Alumni Association of Malaysia. Upon his return, he was admitted to practice at the Malaysian Bar in May 1970. He was in active practice almost purely as an advocate until his elevation to the Court of Appeal on 17 September 1994. He had a distinguished career at the Bar and appeared in several leading cases covering a wide area of law. Many of these cases are reported in the Malayan Law Journal, some of which have introduced new principles into the Malaysian common law. [(1994) 3 MLJ clxxxix].
The Malaysian Bar heartily congratulates YAA on his newly exalted position of Bencher of the ancient and Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn London.
