KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs: The case of Ooi Kean Thong, 24, and Siow Ai Wei, 22, now infamously known as the kissing–couple–at–KLCC case was called for mention today at the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur Magistrate Court near the Pekeliling Flats.
The case was however adjourned as the Magistrate is said to be ill. Counsel for the couple, S. Selvam said the matter has now been set for trial on July 18 and 19.
The couple appeared in the court with support of presumably their relatives and friends, but they were not alone, as a group of lawyers and members of some NGOs were also there.
Seen sitting at the Court room early in the morning was human rights lawyer Ramdas Tikamdas. The young lawyers from the Kuala Lumpur Bar, led by me, Dinesh Nair, Vincent Tey and Lee Shih also made our presence felt as representing the views of the Young Lawyers Committee of KL Bar. Sharmila was also there. All the way from Bentong, Pahang were Haris Ibrahim and Sunil Lopez.
When met, Haris said he came to support the cause of the couple. Some lawyers also felt that the charge in this matter is inconsistent with the position of other Federal laws on public nuisance and that the matter will create a dichotomy wherein only in Kuala Lumpur would we have such a 'crime' of behaving indecently by hugging and kissing.
The Woman’s Aid Organisation (WAO) and All Women’s Action Society (AWAM) were among the NGOs present.
