KUALA LUMPUR: The Bar Council will draft a standard employment contract for domestic workers and submit it to the Government for consideration, its president, Ragunath Kesavan, said.
“We want steps to be taken so that there is effective protection for domestic workers,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
He said the draft would be submitted by the end of the week.
Ragunath was speaking to reporters after the council’s roundtable discussion on protection for domestic workers here yesterday.
He said the draft would incorporate input from non–governmental organisations, foreign missions, legal experts and government agencies.
Ragunath said the contract should specify the general range of duties that the worker would take on.
Tenaganita director Dr Irene Fernandez, meanwhile, said that between her organisation and the Indonesian Embassy, there had been 634 recorded cases of abused domestic workers so far this year.
Tenaganita received 34 cases while the embassy received an average of 100 a month, she said in a press statement yesterday.
