Press Release | Retirement of Chief Justice YAA Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum 12 Apr 2019 11:25 pm

The Malaysian Bar notes that YAA Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum (“YAA Tan Sri Richard Malanjum”)’s last day of service as the Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Malaysia is today, 12 April 2019.

YAA Tan Sri Richard Malanjum’s appointment as the Chief Justice on 11 July 2018 heralded a new dawn for the Judiciary.  Although his tenure of service was relatively short, he has made an indelible mark with the implementation of significant reforms in respect of the administration of justice in Malaysia.

These reforms include the empanelling of judges in the Federal Court via e–balloting; the establishment of a consultative committee comprising members of the Judiciary, the Attorney General’s Chambers and the three Bars; and, most recently, the introduction of the online case management module known as e–Review, which  saves considerable time and money for both lawyers and litigants.  These significant measures are laudable, and appreciated by the Malaysian Bar.

During YAA Tan Sri Richard Malanjum’s term of office, the Malaysian Bar enjoyed an improved and more effective relationship with the Judiciary.  Significantly, the Bar was consulted in relation to appointments to the Judiciary, which was most welcomed.

We value the regular meetings we had with YAA Tan Sri Richard Malanjum and the other three Office Bearers of the Judiciary.  We look forward to further strengthening the Bar’s relationship with the Judiciary, based on mutual respect and with due regard to each other’s role as equal partners in the administration of justice in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Bar wishes YAA Tan Sri Richard Malanjum all the very best for a happy and fulfilling retirement.
