The Malaysian Bar welcomes the tabling of the International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation Bill 2025 for its first reading in Parliament.1 This marks a significant and progressive step towards strengthening Malaysia’s commitment to mediation as a cornerstone of our dispute resolution framework.
The Malaysian Bar firmly supports the promotion and development of mediation, both domestically and internationally. Mediation offers an effective, efficient and amicable path for resolving disputes of any scale — fostering understanding, preserving relationships and reducing the burden on courts. Paid mediation, in particular, offers a practical and sustainable way forward, demonstrating that structured and professional mediation can build a harmonious and progressive society where disputes are resolved constructively rather than contentiously.
Through the Malaysian International Mediation Centre (“MIMC”), the Malaysian Bar stands ready to extend cooperation and technical support towards the creation and continuous strengthening of Malaysia’s mediation ecosystem, in line with global best practices and the objectives of the Singapore Convention on Mediation (formally known as the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation).
The Malaysian Bar encourages continued governmental and public support for mediation as a constructive alternative to adversarial dispute resolution. Together, we can advance a culture of dialogue and collaboration in the Malaysian legal framework.
