The Malaysian Bar expresses its heartfelt condolences and profound sadness on the passing of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Malaysia’s 5th Prime Minister, who passed away yesterday. The Malaysian Bar extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Fondly known as “Pak Lah”, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will be remembered as a leader who embodied humility, integrity, and moderation. His tenure as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009 marked a period of meaningful institutional reform, with renewed emphasis on good governance, transparency, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
Among his notable contributions was his role in accelerating efforts that led to the establishment of the Judicial Appointments Commission (“JAC”) in 2009 — an initiative that promoted greater transparency and accountability in judicial appointments. This was a significant milestone in restoring and preserving the independence of the Malaysian judiciary, and one that resonated deeply with the Malaysian Bar’s long-standing advocacy for judicial reform.
Tun Abdullah’s legacy also includes his emphasis on civil discourse, interfaith understanding, and a leadership style that prioritised listening, compassion, and respect for the rule of law.
The Malaysian Bar pays tribute to the late Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi with deep respect and honour. His contributions to the nation — particularly in laying the groundwork for institutional integrity — will be remembered with gratitude.
With deep respect, the Malaysian Bar mourns the passing of Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
