It is with great sadness that we record that Peter Ling Cheng Chai, who was a partner at Messrs Peter Ling & Co. in Kuala Lumpur, passed away on 30 Aug 2026.
Peter Ling Cheng Chai was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1974 and practised in Wellington before opening his own firm, Peter Ling & Co, in New Plymouth, New Zealand. He returned to Malaysia with his family in 1979.
Peter Ling Cheng Chai was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya on 7 Jan 1980, and was a Member of the Bar until his passing.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Peter Ling Cheng Chai operated branches of Peter Ling & Co. in Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru in addition to the original office in Ayer Tawar, Perak. He acted for clients from all walks of life, including developers and their owners.
Peter Ling Cheng Chai was a strong advocate of community work and justice. He served in various societies, including the Lions Club, serving as President of the Sitiawan chapter in the early 1980s and implemented community projects throughout the Manjung district and beyond.
Peter Ling Cheng Chai (whose eldest son is Peter-Douglas Ling, Treasurer of the Malaysian Bar) is fondly remembered by all Members who had occasion to work with him.
The Malaysian Bar extends its heartfelt condolences and sympathies to his family members and loved ones.
The visitation hours for today (1 Sept 2026) are from 3:00 pm to 10:00 pm, while the visitation hours for tomorrow (2 Sept 2026) are from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm, and the wake service will also be held tomorrow at 8:00 pm.
The funeral service will be held on 3 Sept 2026 (Thursday) at 10:00 am.
