LAWASIA is holding its inaugural annual conference in Malaysia this year. The conference is jointly organized by Law Asia and the Bar Council of Malaysia. It will be held on 29th October to 1st November 2008 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. A total of 1,500 delegates from the Asia Pacific region are expected to attend this conference and it promises to be the premier legal conference of 2008.

About LAWASIA

LAWASIA is a professional association of representatives of bar councils, law associations, individual lawyers, law firms and corporations principally from the Asia Pacific region.

LAWASIA facilitates its members participation in the most dynamic economic region in the world. It also provides an invaluable opportunity for lawyers to come together to exchange ideas and information on regional issues and to establish a network of working relationships in the Asia Pacific region. Membership includes practicing lawyers, government lawyers, law teachers and judges and is open to law firms and corporations world–wide.

Since its inception in 1966, LAWASIA has built up an enviable reputation among lawyers, business people and governments both within and outside the region as a committed, productive and genuinely representative organization. It has established a strong and effective professional network encompassing the vast majority of lawyers who have an interest in the Asia Pacific region.

In 1981, LAWASIA was accorded Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. It also has Observer Status with the World Intellectual Property Organisation and Operational Relations Status with UNESCO.

The objectives of LAWASIA

LAWASIA’s primary objective is to foster professional and business relations between lawyers, businesses and government representatives in the region. It also promotes the rule of law in a diverse range of political, cultural, social and economic contexts throughout the region.

The association’s other objectives include :–

• disseminating knowledge of the law of member countries;
• promoting the efficient working of the legal systems of member countries;
• promoting the efficient working of the legal systems of member countries;

The Business Law section holds a major business law conference on the alternate year to the biennial. In addition to these regular events, conferences and seminars are held on a range of specialist and general topics, according to needs which are either identified by the LAWASIA Executive or which are specifically requested by a member organization.

The 2008 LAWASIA CONFERENCE
