The Malaysian Bar Lifetime Achievement Award (“MBLAA”) was established to honour current or former Members of the Malaysian Bar who have demonstrated dedication and exemplary service, in addition to making outstanding and significant contributions to the Malaysian Bar.  MBLAA is awarded to individuals whose leadership or professional contributions have made a historical and lasting impact on the legal profession in Malaysia and the community at large.

The first MBLAA was conferred on Raja Aziz Addruse (posthumously) at the Malaysian Bar Annual Dinner and Dance on 10 Mar 2012.  Since then, the recipients have been Dr Peter Mooney, Mahadev Shankar, Dr Radhakrishna Ramani (posthumously), Karpal Singh s/o Ram Singh (posthumously), V C George, Param Cumaraswamy, Cecil Rajendra, P G Lim (posthumously), Ambiga Sreenevasan, G T S Sidhu (posthumously), Hendon Mohamed and Sulaiman Abdullah (posthumously).

The Malaysian Bar is proud to have conferred the MBLAA 2025 on Mah Weng Kwai, in recognition of his decades of dedicated service, visionary leadership and impactful contributions to the legal profession and the rule of law in Malaysia.  The award ceremony took place at Le Méridien Kuala Lumpur on 24 Oct 2025.
Among the distinguished guests were:

(1) YAA Datuk Seri Utama Wan Ahmad Farid b Wan Salleh, Chief Justice of Malaysia;
(2) past Presidents of the Malaysian Bar;
(3) Bar Council members;
(4) Members of the Malaysian Bar;
(5) representatives from local universities; and
(6) family and friends of Mah Weng Kwai.

The ceremony commenced with welcoming remarks by the President of the Malaysian Bar, Mohamad Ezri b Abdul Wahab.  In his speech, he paid tribute to Mah Weng Kwai, expressing profound respect for his illustrious contributions to the law, from his leadership at the Bar, his years on the Bench, and in private practice to his work in arbitration, human rights and law reform.  He shared that beyond his numerous accomplishments and accolades, Mah Weng Kwai is best defined by his humility, integrity and steadfast dedication to the cause of justice.  He further remarked that Mah Weng Kwai’s quiet strength, sincerity and lifelong commitment to the profession exemplify the highest ideals of the Malaysian Bar, serving as a reminder that true distinction lies not in position or title, but in service and the positive impact made in the lives of others.

M Ramachelvam, Chairperson of the MBLAA Selection Committee, gave an overview of MBLAA’s legacy since its inception in 2011.  He reflected that since the inaugural recognition of Raja Aziz Addruse, MBLAA has evolved into a constellation of legal excellence, honouring those whose integrity and dedication have shaped both the profession and society.  He emphasised that MBLAA is more than an accolade; it is a reaffirmation of the Bar’s enduring values of integrity, service and justice.  He added that Mah Weng Kwai’s distinguished career, from private practice and the judiciary to his leadership within the Bar, stands as a testament to these very ideals, and to the resilience the profession must uphold in challenging times.

Christopher Leong Sau Foo, past President of the Malaysian Bar (2013 to 2015), delivered the citation for Mah Weng Kwai, highlighting his remarkable contributions to the profession and public service.  From humble beginnings, Mah Weng Kwai’s deep sense of fairness and justice shaped a distinguished career devoted to the law.  Called to the English and Malaysian Bars, he served in the judicial and legal services before leading the Malaysian Bar as President, where he championed reforms to strengthen judicial independence, establish Family Courts and enhance access to justice.  Internationally, he advanced the rule of law and human rights through missions with the International Bar Association (“IBA”) and the Law Association for Asia and the Pacific (“LAWASIA”).  Later, as a Judge of the Court of Appeal and SUHAKAM Commissioner, he delivered landmark decisions and chaired Malaysia’s first inquiry into enforced disappearances, embodying integrity, service and an enduring commitment to justice.

In his acceptance speech, Mah Weng Kwai expressed deep gratitude to the Malaysian Bar for the honour, describing MBLAA as a recognition not of an individual, but of a community united by integrity, service and the rule of law.  Reflecting on his journey through the Bar, the Bench and public institutions, he emphasised the enduring values of professionalism, fairness and independence, urging lawyers to uphold these principles without fear or favour.  He reminded the profession that true justice must always be fair, compassionate and humane.

The ceremony concluded with a delightful high tea reception for all invited guests.  Through MBLAA, the Malaysian Bar honours individuals whose lifelong service and exemplary leadership elevate the legal profession and inspire future generations in the continued pursuit of justice.
