An Extraordinary General Meeting of the Malaysian Bar (“EGM”) was held at Wisma MCA, Kuala Lumpur on 10 May 2023.
The EGM was convened pursuant to a requisition by 173 Members of the Malaysian Bar under section 65(2) of the Legal Profession Act 1976 (“LPA”) to consider the “Motion on the Independence of the Judiciary and Upholding the Rule of Law” proposed by Zainur Zakaria and seconded by Alex De Silva.
A brief summary of the EGM is as follows:
(1) The Chairman, Karen Cheah Yee Lynn (President of the Malaysian Bar) called the meeting to order at 2:20 pm, as the quorum of 500 Members had been achieved at 2:19 pm.
(2) The “Resolution on the Independence of the Judiciary and Upholding the Rule of Law” was adopted at the EGM. Click here to view the resolution on the Malaysian Bar website.
(3) A total of 731 Members and 51 pupils in chambers registered their attendance at the EGM, which concluded at 4:47 pm.
