In celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2025, the Bar Council Intellectual Property Committee (“IPC”) set up booths at two prominent shopping malls, namely 1 Utama Shopping Centre and Atria Shopping Gallery, on 26 Apr 2025 to raise awareness about intellectual property (“IP”) among the public.

The booths were held simultaneously from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm and attracted many curious shoppers who stopped by to learn how IP law plays a crucial role in protecting ideas and driving innovation.
The highlight of the event was the free one-on-one consultation sessions conducted by members of IPC and volunteer IP lawyers. Visitors received practical and personalised guidance on various aspects of IP, including copyright, trademarks, patents, and commercialisation of IP assets. For many visitors, the sessions offered valuable insights into how they could better safeguard their creative output in an increasingly digital world.
This year’s global theme, “IP and Music: Feel the Beat of IP”, proved to be a serendipitous match with the interests of many visitors. Coincidentally, approximately 30 visitors turned out to be involved in music or other creative fields. They sought advice on protecting their works, particularly in areas such as copyright registration, licensing, enforcement, and understanding how the IP framework supports their creative pursuits.

In addition to the consultation sessions, the booths also showcased and distributed IPC’s IP Comic, which was created and designed by Anita Kaur Gerewal, a member of IPC. It is an educational publication designed to make IP concepts more accessible and engaging for the public. The comic was well-received, particularly among younger visitors and those new to IP, who appreciated the comic’s simple explanations and creative illustrations. Many visitors took home copies of the comic, allowing them to continue learning about IP rights at their own pace.
