80th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Bar (14 Mar 2026) 16 Mar 2026 4:02 pm

The 80th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Bar (“AGM”) was held at Menara MATRADE, Kuala Lumpur on 14 Mar 2026.

A brief summary of the AGM follows below.

(1) As the quorum was not achieved by 11:00 am, the Chairman of the AGM, Mohamad Ezri b Abdul Wahab (President of the Malaysian Bar), announced an adjournment of the AGM to 11:15 am, in accordance with section 64(5) of the Legal Profession Act 1976.

(2) At 12:18 pm, the Chairman called the reconvened meeting to order.

(3) Eleven motions had been proposed for consideration at the AGM.

(4) The following nine resolutions were adopted by the Members, as follows:

  • Resolution on Ensuring Prosecutorial Independence with the Separation of the Offices of the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor;
  • Resolution to Condemn Enforced Disappearances and to Urge Legal Reforms to Prevent and Address Enforced Disappearance in Malaysia;
  • Resolution on Strengthening Judicial Independence of Sessions Court Judges and Magistrates, and Structural Separation within the Judicial and Legal Service;
  • Resolution to Condemn Executive Encroachment into the Legal Profession Qualifying Board and Legal Education;

  • Resolution to Increase the LawCare Fund Levy from RM100 to RM130 and to Expand the Use of the LawCare Fund to Provide Assistance for Members Affected by Natural Disasters;
  • Resolution on the Independence of the Judicial Appointments and Promotions Processes;
  • Resolution to Address Touting in Courts, Public Offices and Other Private or Non-Governmental Premises;
  • Resolution on Upholding International Law and the Protection of Civilian Populations; and
  • Resolution to Condemn Animal Cruelty and for Strict Enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

A total of 433 Members and 29 pupils in chambers registered their attendance at the AGM, which concluded at 3:53 pm.

At the first Bar Council (“BC”) meeting for the 2026/27 term held immediately after the AGM, the following Office Bearers of the Malaysian Bar were elected:

  • President: Anand Raj (immediate past Vice-President)
  • Vice-President: Murshidah bt Mustafa (elected to BC by postal ballot)
  • Secretary: R Jayabalan (elected to BC by postal ballot)
  • Peter-Douglas Ling (elected to BC by postal ballot) was appointed as Treasurer.
