Circular No 153/2012
Dated 13 July 2012
To Members of the Malaysian Bar
Registration for the first two Advocacy Training Courses (“ATCs”) for 2012 (scheduled in July 2012) in Kuala Lumpur is full. The Bar Council Professional Standards and Development Committee has fixed the dates for the ATCs for the rest of 2012.
The course is designed to teach the basics of advocacy, utilising the Hampel method of advocacy teaching. The Hampel teaching method requires participants to perform as advocates in a simulated courtroom environment under the guidance of experienced and trained practitioners who will observe their performance and offer guidance. Participants will be divided into groups of six persons and will be trained by at least two trainers in each group.
The course is best suited to teaching advocacy to lawyers in their first to third years of practice, as it aims to identify and correct basic mistakes in advocacy and to offer guidance to new practitioners on the correct way to present themselves and their arguments in a courtroom.
The participation fee is only RM500 per person for a two–day intensive course. The details of the upcoming ATCs are as follows:
(1) ATC 3: Penang, 6 and 7 Oct 2012 (Saturday and Sunday);
(2) ATC 4: Kuala Lumpur, 13 and 14 Oct 2012 (Saturday and Sunday);
(3) ATC 5: Seremban, 20 and 21 Oct 2012 (Saturday and Sunday);
(4) ATC 6: Kuantan, 20 and 21 Oct 2012 (Saturday and Sunday);
(5) ATC 7: Kuala Lumpur, 10 and 11 Nov 2012 (Saturday and Sunday);
(6) ATC 8: Muar, 24 and 25 Nov 2012 (Saturday and Sunday); and
(7) ATC 9: Kuala Lumpur, 8 and 9 Dec 2012 (Saturday and Sunday).
Members are encouraged to register for, and attend, the course.
Given the nature of the teaching method employed, the course is open to only 30 participants for each session. Places will be given on a first–come, first–served basis but Members are encouraged to register their names nonetheless, as the course will be organised on a regular basis for the benefit of Members.
This course carries 12 points for trainers, facilitators and participants under the Bar Council Continuing Professional Development Scheme.
To register, kindly complete and submit the registration form by fax to 03–2026 1313 / 2034 2825 or by email to fazli@malaysianbar.org.my / vila@malaysianbar.org.my. For enquiries, contact Mohd Fazli Rosman (03–2050 2105; fazli@malaysianbar.org.my) or Vilashini Vijayan (03–2050 2095;
