The Professional Standards and Development Committee (“PSDC”) is tasked with overseeing professional development activities of the Malaysian Bar, by organising contemporary and current continuing legal education courses for Members of the Bar and pupils in chambers. PSDC comprises representatives appointed from each state bar and regional liaison persons to facilitate coordination with the state bars to organise seminars, workshops, conferences and other appropriate events.
In light of the resolution passed at the 66th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Bar on 10 Mar 2012 regarding the mandatory Continuing Professional Development (“CPD”) Scheme, PSDC is tasked with the additional responsibility to ensure the effective implementation of the CPD Scheme.
Based on the approved CPD Guidelines, a CPD cycle will run for 24 months, with the first cycle from 1 July 2012 until 30 June 2014. Those who are in practice on 1 July 2012 will be expected to accumulate 16 CPD points by 30 June 2014. Those who come into practice or resume practice after 1 July 2012 will be required to accumulate a pro–rated number of CPD points during this cycle.
PSDC has developed a broad and comprehensive calendar of courses to provide Members with a platform to accumulate the required CPD points within the stipulated cycle. The calendar, containing information about courses organised by the Bar Council and state bar committees, is featured on the main page of the Malaysian Bar website. CDP points can only be accumulated for courses attended from 1 July 2012 onwards.
The Bar Council has appointed Santhi Latha, Director of the PSDC Department, to work on various aspects of developing a cohesive and nationally–inclusive CPD structure for Members.
The courses organised by PSDC from 1 Jan 2012 include:
