On 22 Apr 2019, the Bar Council Professional Indemnity Insurance (“PII”) and Risk Management Department organised its second seminar on “How Not to be a Statistic: The Conveyancing Scam” for the year, at the Kelantan Bar Auditorium, Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
The seminar panellists discussed the various conveyancing scam cases reported to the PII Scheme and the implications for law firms. The participants were also exposed to best practices, and risk management policies and procedures that should be implemented by Members, especially for those who handle conveyancing matters.
Attended by 25 participants, comprising Members of the Bar and pupils in chambers, the half–day afternoon seminar carried two Continuing Professional Development (“CPD”) points. Tony Woon Yeow Thong moderated the session, and the line–up of panellists consisted of:
(1) Mohan Sankaran of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Sdn Bhd (broker for the PII Scheme);
(2) Wan Mansor Wan Mohamed of Messrs Lua & Mansor; and
(3) Dennis Goh of Jardine Lloyd Thompson Sdn Bhd.
The panellists emphasised the importance of scam prevention techniques, which aim to safeguard lawyers and law firms from being victims. The participants were also taught methods to counter the threat of being scammed, and how they can adapt the methods to their own practice. Throughout the event, the panellists shared their experiences and the latest developments pertaining to the topic, and the participants were given plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
Overall, the seminar was a success and the feedback received was positive. Over 92% of the participants agreed that the seminar met their expectations and indicated that they would recommend it to others. After the seminar ended at 5:00 pm, discussion continued among the participants and panellists while they helped themselves to refreshments served by the Kelantan Bar Committee.
