The Getting Started! Workshop is an essential workshop for lawyers intending to set up their own practice. The workshop covers five basic subjects that every hopeful legal practice owner should know — “The Fundamentals of Legal Practice”, “Bar Council’s Statutory Requirements”, “Accounting & Taxation”, “Conveyancing in a Competitive Climate”, and “Winning Ways Through Civil Litigation”.
Since this series of workshop was introduced in 2007, it has featured experienced lawyers and consultants as speakers. For the October 2018 workshop in Kuala Lumpur, the speakers and sessions were as follows:
C S Lam | The Fundamentals of Legal Practice |
Heron Khalid Goh | Accounting & Taxation |
Andrew Wong | Conveyancing in a Competitive Climate |
Karen Cheah Yee Lynn | Winning Ways Through Civil Litigation Practice |
For the session on Bar Council’s statutory requirements, the speakers were Gayathri Chidambara Iyer from the Bar Council’s Membership Department, and Johan Shahar from Jardine Lloyd Thompson Sdn Bhd. Both speakers explained the prerequisites and available options by the Bar Council to set up a legal practice, the Professional Indemnity Insurance (“PII”) cover, and basic risk management techniques for lawyers to follow.
