Some Members of Parliament from Nepal and Bangladesh visited Bar Council Malaysia on 21 Apr 2018 as part of their field visit to Malaysia to appraise the situation of Nepali and Bangladeshi migrant workers in Malaysia. They were welcomed by Roger Chan Weng Keng, Secretary of the Malaysian Bar and M Ramachelvam, Chairperson of the Bar Council Migrants, Refugees and Immigration Affairs Committee.
The field visit was aimed at bringing about policy reforms that advocate for the rights and welfare of migrant workers in Nepal and Bangladesh through informed and evidence–based / first–hand experience of the situation on the ground.
The delegates were briefed on the living and working conditions of Nepali and Bangladeshi migrant workers in Malaysia; the existing laws and policies; and work done by the Bar Council on addressing migrant labour issues in Malaysia.
