KOTA BHARU: A SRO Enforcement team of 5 members led by the Deputy
Chairman of the SRO Enforcement Committee (SREC), Ong Siew Wan visited three
legal firms in Kota Bharu on July 19.
When contacted, Ong said the team has found some irregularities in the manner in
which some of the firms had billed their clients. In one firm, the clients were
billed for disbursements not actually incurred.
Ong also revealed that one of the firms did not charge any fee for the
preparation of the sale and purchase agreement. The reason given, Ong said, was
that all documentations were prepared by the developer. However, it showed
otherwise upon examination of the files.
In another case, the team discovered that a disbursement
account opened by one firm had been used to make advanced payments or
disbursements for unrelated matters.
The SREC is now waiting for a detailed report from the team
before making any appropriate recommendation to the Bar Council for the next
course of action.
Meanwhile, Ong also disclosed that the SRO Enforcement Team will be going back
to Penang to visit a few firms left out in its last visit there because the SREC
has received a lot of complaints from lawyers that these firms are giving
discount.
