The new office of the SRO Enforcement Department.KUALA LUMPUR, Thurs: The SRO Enforcement department has moved to the third floor of the Secretariat building after two conference rooms were converted into an office for its use.

The department provides the administrative support to the Solicitors Remuneration Enforcement Committee which has been assigned to the task of enforcing the Solicitors’ Remuneration Order.

Currently, the department has one executive officer namely Emily Lee and 2 administrative assistants.

Teena Mathew from the Membership department will join the SRO Enforcement department as its second executive officer at the end of this month.

"This shows that the Bar Council is attaching great importance to enforcing the SRO", said Tony Woon who is the Chairman of the SRO Enforcement Committee.

Woon added that this was necessary as members had voted overwhelmingly in favour of the no-discount rule at the October 22 annual general meeting.

The SRO Enforcement Department staff. The department has been busy implementing the various matters assigned by the said Committee including but not limited to issuing the notice to complete and deliver a return to all law firms in the country; perusing the returns received; processing applications for waiver of fees; attending to numerous queries on the enforcement process; issuing notices to provide information; issuing notices requiring advocates and solicitors to attend personally and also drafting of complaints to the Disciplinary Board.

To date, the department has issued a total of 5,323 notices to law firms in the country for submission of their returns.

The Committee has also decided that requisite action be taken against those firms who have yet to submit the requested returns and the department is currently attending to it.

At the time of writing this report, the Committee has received approximately a total of 136 complaints, both verbal and written.

Notices have also been issued to 17 members of the Bar requiring them to attend personally and produce for examination all relevant documents relating to the transaction(s) in question.
