THE maritime industry is seriously in need of a dedicated Admiralty Court to deal with maritime problems with the speed, quality and uniformity that the sector lacks.

In line with this, the Bar Council will organise a forum Admiralty Court Forum – The Way Forward on Nov 15 to pave the way for the establishment of a maritime Admiralty Court.

The Bar Council said in a statement that the forum objectives were to draw specific focus on the issue; discuss the economic and social benefits to the nation as well as the industry, details of the structure of the desired Admiralty Court and how to make the system work.

“Although the forum is organised by the Bar Council, the beneficiaries of this effort will be the maritime stakeholders.

“The industry will have a special maritime court that will result in tremendous savings in dispute resolution cost for Malaysian maritime players as well as have their disputes resolved locally using international standards.

“This would be a major development, not merely for the country's maritime growth but also for our international standing in providing first world specialist dispute resolution services,” it said.

Bar Council shipping and admiralty law committee deputy chairman Sitpah Selvaratnam said there would be a special address by Sabah and Sarawak High Court chief judge Tan Seri Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum at the forum.

“This will spark the anticipation that the realisation of this aspiration of a dedicated Admiralty Court is near,” she said.

The forum is supported by Malaysian Shipowners Association, Maritime Institute of Malaysia, Association of Marine Industries of Malaysia and Malaysia Institute of Transport.
