A Court for the Maritime Industry PDF Print E-mail

Sitpah SelvaratnamAt the National Maritime Conference in March 2007, the 350-strong participation unanimously endorsed the need for a dedicated Admiralty Court to meet the needs of the maritime industry. "The Admiralty Court Forum - the Way Forward"; organised by the Bar Council on 15 November 2007 draws specific focus to this issue; to state with clarity the economic and social benefits to the nation and maritime industry, with details of the structure of the desired Admiralty Court, and the precise measures required to make this system work. A special address by the Chief Judge of the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum at this Forum sparks anticipation that the realisation of this aspiration is near.

Although this Forum is organised by the Bar Council, the beneficiaries of this effort would be the maritime stakeholders. The industry would have a specialist maritime Court to pay undivided attention to its particular maritime problems, with the speed, quality and uniformity the industry demands. There will be a tremendous savings in dispute resolution costs for Malaysian maritime entities to have their disputes confidently resolved, on international standards, in their home ground, and at their doorstep.

This would be a major development, not merely for Malaysia's maritime growth but also for Malaysia's international standing, in providing First World specialist dispute resolution services. Maritime entities and others interested in being a part of this evolution are encouraged to participate at this Forum, which is supported by MASA, IKMAL, MIMA, AMIM and MITRANs.
