The Professional Standards and Development Committee of the Bar Council (PSDC), in conjunction with the Joint Consultative Committee (a body established by the PSDC and comprising of representatives from the public and private law schools) recently organized a programme to address the deteriorating standard of pupils entering the Bar. The first law school to host this programme was the Law Faculty of UKM, Bangi. The programme was held on 21 March 2009.

The programme enabled law students to meet members of the Malaysian Bar.  It was also to update the students on the needs of the legal profession and provide an opportunity for them to exchange ideas and engage in dialogue on the challenges faced by the profession.
The target group was the final year students who would soon be reading in chambers. However, as it is the intention of the PSDC to reach out to law students at all levels, students from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UITM) also attended the session.

The session was chaired by Mr Steven Thiru, Chairman of the PSDC. After a brief introduction about the programme he invited Pn. Hendon Mohamed to speak on “The Expectations of the Malaysian Bar”.

Later, Mr Steven Thiru spoke on “Lawyering Skills”. This was followed by a talk on “Ethics at the Bar” by Mr Colin Pereira (the Deputy Chairman of the PSDC); “Practising Corporate Law” by Jeremiah R. Gurusamy and “The Young Lawyer Programmes” by Lai Chee Hoe.

Each session was interactive in nature with the speakers taking a lead role in guiding the discussions.  This approach allowed for the topics to be fully discussed and extensively explored.

The programme was very successful, and Dr. Faridah Jalil of the UKM Law Faculty noted that “As a premier law school, UKM will always support the initiatives of the Bar Council in assisting the faculty to enhance the quality of our students. Such cooperation will make our students more competitive and fully alert to the requirement of the profession.”
