The Professional Standards and Development Committee organised a seminar on "Techniques
of Good Legal Opinion Writing" which was conducted by the Australian Government
Solicitors Office on November 2, 2007. The seminar attracted 100 participants.
Mr. Steven Thiruneelakandan, Chairman of the Professional Standards and Development
Committee, gave the opening address and welcomed the three speakers from the
Australian Government Solicitors Office, namely, Mr. Richard Harding, Ms. Susie
Brown and Mr. Jake Blight.
Mr. Richard Harding spoke on the fundamentals of good opinion writing. Briefly,
he identified 10 elements that a good opinion must have :-
Sets out the background
Is it well structured?
Is it well researched?
Is it well reasoned?
Is it clear and concise?
Is it practical?
Is it helpful?
Does it reach definite conclusions?
Is it the right opinion?
Does it arrive on time?
There was then a good question and answer session. Ms. Susie Brown and Mr.
Jake Blight were able to field a variety of questions on opinion writing. The
three speakers also gave very good advice on the practical aspects of opinions.
The session ended with the Deputy Chairman of the Professional Standards and
Development Committee, Mr. Colin Andrew Pereira giving out the tokens of appreciation
to the speakers.
